Quarterbacks have to understand defender rules, then use those rules against the defense.
Man coverage and zone coverage do not ask for the same throw.
In man, the defender is attached to the receiver. He is chasing leverage, trail position, hip control, and body relationship. That often gives the quarterback permission to throw away from leverage and use more arc when the route allows it.
In zone, the defender is attached to space. The safety, nickel, or hook player is closing based on route distribution and the quarterback’s delivery. Now the issue is time. The ball usually has to come out earlier, flatter, and to the correct spot before the window collapses.
That is why “touch” is not one skill.
Man throws require understanding body position.
Zone throws require understanding space and timing.
The quarterback who sees the defender’s technique can select the right type of throw to beat the coverage rules.
